Let’s return to Abraham’s story one more time. God wanted a man who would believe Him. Then He gave him a son, Isaac, and many descendants who eventually made up the nation of Israel. They were His covenant people. Just as God had spoken to Abraham, his descendants went into Egypt and served another people. Eventually, He brought them out by a mighty hand – with many signs and wonders – and settled them in the land of Canaan. (Just as He had promised).

For nearly two thousand years there was only one group of people with whom God had a covenant. He loved all men, but He developed this relationship with this one group of people so that His Son could be sent into the world. Our Creator chose Abraham because he believed and obeyed God when He spoke to him. So they established a covenant – a sort of contract- Abraham would obey God and God would bless Abraham in the process. God promised to be his defender, his provider, his healer, his all-in-all.

After these special people had stayed in Egypt for 400 years, God brought them out with many signs and wonders. Miracle after miracle made even the Egyptians fear their God as these slaves were set free to journey to their land. But even after seeing the miracles, the generation who left Egypt could not go all the way to the land of promise. They doubted God in the wilderness through which they were passing, and had to stay there for 40 years, until the next generation had grown up. During that time, God gave to Moses, their leader, laws and principles which should guide their lives. He provided for them on a daily basis, but the greatest blessings would only be revealed to those who were going to enter the Promised Land.

Finally the day came. The first generation had died and the new group, ones who had grown up learning God’s principles, were going into the land. Moses gathered all the people together and made some decrees. He told the people that they were to obey God totally and stay in covenant with Him. If they did, many blessings would be theirs. They would have abundant provision, their children would be blessed, and their cattle and livestock would be blessed. God would open up the Heavens to give rain to their land and everything they put their hand to would prosper. They would be the head and not the tail,  above and not beneath, and other nations would fear them because they would be recognized as God’s covenant people. These blessings, listed in Deuteronomy 28 are called the “Blessings of Abraham.” They are God’s extravagant promises to His special people when they are obedient to Him.

So where do those of us who aren’t Jewish come in?

This is where we come in. Jesus paid the price for us so that we could be grafted into the original covenant with Abraham. The blessing of Abraham has come to the gentiles. Through Jesus, these promises are ours. if you want to know what God’s will is for you, meditate on Deuteronomy 28:1-10. His will is for you to be obedient to Him. And his will is for all of these blessings to be yours – through faith. Through faith and patience, we should inherit these promises, if our lives line up with what God is asking of us.

Many people call these blessings “our promised land.” Just as the children of Israel could not enter the land because of unbelief, neither can we if we don’t believe what God is saying. Indeed many don’t know about these promises. Some even discount anyone who talks about the blessings of God. I don’t want to be like that, do you? I want to understand and receive everything my Father has for me. What Jesus has done for us is greater than anyone can imagine! Only by spending time with our Father can we begin to see the greatness of the covenant.

That’s the life I want. I want to call upon the name of the Lord and drink from the cup that He has provided. As we steep ourselves in these truths of God’s will and plan, we step into a new realm of faith. We expect things out of the ordinary to come our way. We are constantly reaching for all that has been promised. With this foundation of knowing what God has promised, our prayers demonstrate new energy. No longer are our prayers weak and ineffective; they become bold and powerful.

I know that you want this just as I do! Today, take the time to look at Deuteronomy 28 for yourself. Meditate on the blessings which God desires for you. Then determine in your heart that you will pray and stand until God’s will is manifested in your life.
